Three reasons to choose a Volkswagen Taos over a Volkswagen Tiguan

When it comes to a competent, versatile and fun-to-drive SUV, you can't go wrong with Volkswagen. Now, because the choice offered is interesting, it's not easy to make a selection.

For example, you might be hesitating between the new Taos model or the Tiguan, which has been with us for a while now. Which one to choose?

What complicates the matter is that there are no bad vehicles here. We could put forward arguments that would present each one in a more interesting light than the other. However, in today's environment, there may be a case to be made for a more reasonable alternative, if it can meet your needs.

Let's see why the Volkswagen Taos can be just as interesting a purchase, and more financially advantageous than the larger Tiguan.

Space

It's normal, we tend to choose a larger vehicle thinking that it offers us more space. That's true, but to what extent? An analysis of the two vehicles' data proves interesting in this regard.

With the Tiguan, the volume behind the second row of seats is 1065 liters. It's 2081 liters when it's folded down. That's very good, but the Taos is not to be outdone. With the front-wheel drive version, the respective volumes are 790 and 1866 liters. With the all-wheel drive models, we're talking about 705 and 1705 liters.

So it's true that the Tiguan offers more space, but if you can live well with the incredible volume of the Taos, don't hesitate. And interestingly, a Tiguan with a third bench seat (available with all models) offers a slightly smaller total cargo volume than the Taos (1860 liters).

Fuel consumption

Each model is served by its own engine. The Tiguan is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that offers 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. At the pump, fuel consumption is 10.8 L/100 km for city driving and 8.0 L/100 km for highway driving.

That's excellent, really. However, if you're happy with the Taos' cargo volume and space, you'll save money with it, as the fuel economy ratings of its 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine (158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque) are 9.5 L/100 km for city driving, 7.4 L/100 km for highway driving.

The drive

Finally, if both models are interesting to drive, like any Volkswagen product, the Taos, because of its reduced weight (1,556 kg vs. 1,735 kg) and pocket size, is more manageable, agile and responsive. In fact, the spirit of the Golf has been preserved with this one.

A test drive will convince you of this.

Finally, for both models, note that the financing rates, both for purchase and lease, are identical at the time of writing.
